What is P&ABs Corporate Privacy Officer Program?

P&ABs Corporate Privacy Officers Program 2001 is the nations premier multi-industry privacy leadership training and support program for privacy officers. Directed by Alan Westin, recognized as the foremost U.S. authority on privacy, the Program is conducted by Privacy & American Business, the nations most often quoted and respected business-focused privacy think tank.

CPO 2001 is a comprehensive, year-long professional development initiative to support business staffers managing privacy at every level on and offline. It offers hands-on experience, networking, and access to the latest thinking of decision makers, corporate leaders, and experts. It provides the critical tools, mentoring and strategies CPOs need to understand, craft, direct and communicate their approaches and policies inside and outside their organizations, up the chain of leadership and down.

Why CPOs?

These forces are all moving companies to approach consumer privacy in new ways. One of those ways is to designate a company officer or a privacy team leader to oversee and coordinate all the organizations activities with privacy implications.

As one CPO said, This [position] represents a transition to an active corporate stance on privacy. It is no longer a case of defensive risk management, but recognition that privacy is a product that establishes our organizationŐs credibility and trust with consumers and society.

Activities that CPOs Spearhead and P&ABs 2001 Program Supports

While the Privacy Officer is a relatively new position in most companies and their scope of action is not always well defined, interaction with those in the know and timely information are vital. CPO 2001 provides both.

These are some of the CPO activities P&ABs CPO 2001 supports:

As industries overlap and merge, and the privacy debate becomes more complicated, CPOs must be prepared to approach multi-industry issues in both on and offline environments on a national and global scale.

Why P&ABs Corporate Privacy Officer 2001?

Centered on consumer privacy, P&ABs CPO Program is in its second year. The Program supports CPOs in all aspects of their work. Participation in CPO 2001 positions a company to manage privacy internally and externally and to gain deserved public and customer recognition as a privacy leader. It also enhances personal and professional development and provides CPOs the experiences and credentials needed to become expert in navigating the privacy arena.

Swelling Internet growth has put privacy on the screen for people of all ages and ethnicities who are logging on in the Information Age. They are aware of crimes like identity theft and use of personal information for unwanted and intrusive marketing. Each story galvanizes the media, Congress, state legislatures and governments abroad.

Internet-related legislation and privacy laws have been reactive, not pro-active. Without meaningful strategies to ensure that companies are addressing these concerns substantively, government will intervene. CPO 2001 gives organizations the information and hands-on direction they need to anticipate potential obstacles and address them before they invite negative headlines and governmental action.

Many organizations, large and small, continue as active offline businesses, though the e-commerce boom has pushed many traditional businesses to straddle both traditional and new cyber-marketplaces. These companies face the same scrutiny and invite the same privacy risks. P&AB has been the prime source of information and proven tactical guidance for businesses both on and offline, understands both business environments, and communicates the issues and the solutions.

ACPO Bonus

An outgrowth of P&ABs CPO Program 2000 was the birth of a new professional association that fosters development of CPOs. Company leaders in an array of industries have been instrumental in the launch of the Association of Corporate Privacy Officers (ACPO), incorporated in New Jersey as an independent, non-profit 501(c)(3) professional organization.

"Privacy is now a top tier issue with consumers online and offline. Formation of ACPO is recognition that the corporate world understands this too. Within a short time, every sensible company will have a CPO on its management team. It also recognizes that practitioners themselves believe there is a need and a place for professional development that will provide ongoing training for themselves and a place to grow a pool of professional privacy officers to meet rising demand by smart companies in all industry sectors," said Alan Westin. ACPO, which P&AB administers, is developing a program that accords proper professional status to this new position being institutionalized in corporations everywhere.

Founding Members of ACPOs Organizing Committee include privacy officers from American Express, Citigroup, Delta Airlines, Dun & Bradstreet, EDS, Equifax, Image Data, MasterCard, Mutual of Omaha, Nationwide Insurance, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Prudential, Royal Bank, Sabre, Inc., Verizon, Walt Disney Internet Group, Imperiale Group, and others.

Two subcommittees of the ACPO Organizing Committee were formed in November 2000. They are engaged in considering by-laws and recommending benchmarking, certification, placement and other professionally-related activity guidelines. All members of CPO 2001 will be Founding Members of the ACPO and others will have the option of participating in Organizing Committee activities.

The Non-Profit Advantage

P&AB is a non-profit 501(c)(3) activity of the Center for Social & Legal Research its parent and may be funded as a sponsorship by corporate foundations, through other non-profit resources, and/or may be tax deductible. Some organizations, because of the excellent public exposure P&ABs programs offer and the practical assistance it provides, fund participation through their marketing, public relations departments, corporate affairs, and some through their professional development resources.

Benefits and Costs

The greatest benefits P&ABs CPO 2001 provides is the opportunity for CPOs to gain the personal tools and professional credentials necessary to manage privacy effectively and be regarded as experts, within and outside their organizations. For member organizations, it projects a positive leadership role on the changing national and global privacy stage.

To make CPO 2001s tangible benefits more broadly available, P&AB has developed a Tiered Membership Structure. Tier One is for organizations wishing to involve and inform multiple staff members and management in growing the companys privacy approaches by having multiple participation and access to CPO Program 2001s full range of services and activities. Tier Two is for organizations not needing the full range of services and activities provided by CPO Program 2001. Tier Three is for individuals or organizations which may select optional participation in activities and services provided in the CPO Program 2001.
